Activities

Ecotourism

Studded with stands of hardwoods and palm trees throughout, the terrain of Cat Island is a favorite nesting spot for many indigenous and migratory bird species. Historic landmark Mount Alvernia is the home of songbirds who delight in making their distinctive warbling sounds. Beautiful blue holes, mysterious bat caves and adventurous nature trails form a tropical backdrop to the region's many natural treasures. These include Griffin Bat Cave and two inland blue holes, one of which is believed to contain eyeless species of fish and shrimp, while the other, Bad Blue Hole, originates as a freshwater lake that flows to the sea via underground caverns with strong undersea currents. Make sure to visit Orange Creek in North Cat Island, and discover how this stretch of water garnered its name from the orange glow that emanates from the surface when certain atmospheric conditions are met including wave conditions, wind factors and the angle of the sun.

Scuba Diving

While Cat Island draws many tourists each year for its pristine white beaches, just offshore, Cat Island also offers beautiful reef coral heads and sea-life waiting for exploration. Cat Island draws divers looking to see some of the larger sea life cruising the Bahamas such as hammerhead and white tip sharks. Yet don’t miss out on the smaller see creatures like a flight of squid, majestic trumpetfish or hidden squirrel fish.
